The FORT KNOX FIVE have the midas touch for producing heavy hitting records. Since 2003, they have released an arsenal of floor rocking singles and remixes from their Washington DC based label, Fort Knox Recordings. Their unique DJ style has proven irresistible to clubgoers worldwide. They have performed on 5 continents, and in over 25 different countries. Their music & skills caught the attention of Gwen Stefani, who asked the FORT KNOX FIVE to be her tour DJs for her Harajuku Lovers tour with the Black Eyed Peas.

2013 is a very special year for Fort Knox Five. This year, they’re celebrating 10 years of producing incredible art and we’re thrilled to have their return to King King. Jon H will be joined by his partner and Fort Knox Five member Thunderball for a very special tagteam set. Fort Knox Five has undoubtedly become an icon in the electronic music scene, consistently crafting superb sounds and remixes of some of music’s greatest legends including Bob Marley, Louis Armstrong, The Beatles and more. These global party-rockers have accumulated a long list of achievements on their resume, having tracks featured everywhere from EA sports videogames to films and television as well. Their live shows and DJ sets are always a fun and funky dance party. Their ability to blend heavy bass with funk, hiphop, reggae, breaks and latin infused instrumentals truly brings a flavorful energy to the night.

The Funk Hunters

The Funk Hunters are arguably one of Canada’s busiest electronic acts. Performing their signature high-energy DJ sets and groundbreaking Audio-Visual show at some of the world’s most popular music festivals and clubs has earned them an international following. These guys definitely left a huge impression when they made their LA debut at Big Bass last October. They’ll be throwing down one of their signature high-energy, super fun AV sets Friday night!

Armed with 4-turntables, their very own custom synched visuals, and the unique ability to create live mashups and remixes, their live show stands out. Seamlessly blending original productions with everything from Hip Hop to House, Glitch Hop to Drum & Bass, and everything funky in between, The Funk Hunters create original sets never replicated. Refusing to be confined by genres, it’s not uncommon to find this duo headlining an all bass music festival one night and then performing a funk, soul, or boogie set the next. Their new Audio Visual show continues to see them push boundaries, merging their skills as Music Producers, Visual Artists, and DJs, into a truly unique and live experience. By producing their own custom content, they’ve managed to avoid the stigma associated with ‘music-video DJs’ yet still preserve their improvised multi-genre style DJ performance – only now they’re equipped with synched visuals, controlled straight from the turntables.

Smalltown DJs

If your ears work, you can’t not have fun at a Smalltown DJs gig. That’s a scientific fact. Look it up. The Canadian duo’s uncanny ability to make crowds feel like schoolkids at recess stems naturally from their focus on maximizing fun for themselves.

‘We’re just out to consistently have the best time possible,’ says Pete Emes, who shares space behind the decks with partner Mike Grimes.  This fun maximization philosophy is the unifying force be-hind the Smalltown’s genre-warping club sets, which tend to cover vast musical territory but never veer from the good times vibe.

Lead singer Joe Hursley is the epitome of a rock-n-roll front man, his style is that of a hungry tiger on the prowl… A complete savage. He can be scene all over town from art events to night clubs and even some of So-Cal’s biggest festivals. Zagha Design jewelry is made from genuine american leather and built to last. Each piece is laser cut and hand finished. The Skultasquid necklace was originally inspired while i was in Tokyo. I spotted a colorful wall with a squid painting while walking through Yo-Yogi park and i remember thinking “what a great tattoo that would make”. Some time later, while designing for my senior show, the thought came back to me and thus, the Skultasquid was born.

Bobby C Sound TV is a straight up AV gangster! We caught his live set at Shambhala this past summer and we were like “whoa!” Not only and extremely accomplished and prolific producer, Bobby C also has an amazing talent for creating energetic and colorful mashup videos to go along with every one of his tunes! As he’s DJing he’s not just controlling his tunes, but also his videos, mixing from video-to-video as he mixes from track-to-track.

Afro Q Ben is a multi-instrumentist inspired by the West Coast electronic scene with an on going addiction to crate digging. He draws from a wide palate of sonic colours, blending afro-cuban rhythms with funk, reggae and hip-hop.

Also a set brought to you by our very own Lou E. Bagels. Who changes genres quicker than his undies and is also half of The Black 22′s.

Phunky Brewster is back! And phunkier than ever so make sure who hit the floor running this Big Bass we’re coming in hot!

Bobby C Sound TV is a straight up AV gangster and we couldn’t be more excited about his upcoming appearance at The Big Bass Allstar Variety Show on 4/5. We caught his live set at Shambhala this past summer and we were like “whoa!” Not only and extremely accomplished and prolific producer, Bobby C also has an amazing talent for creating energetic and colorful mashup videos to go along with every one of his tunes! As he’s DJing he’s not just controlling his tunes, but also his videos, mixing from video-to-video as he mixes from track-to-track. Check out the video below of his entire set at Shambhala!

He’s got a TON of free downloads on his Soundcloud page, so make sure you link up and like up at the bottom of the page! We asked Bobby to do an interview with Good Vibe correspondant Gina Calderoni. Here’s how it all went down:

GV: Hi Bobby C! Congratulations on your first LA show! Since there will be people that have never seen you play live what is the best way to describe your show experience?

BCSTV: Thanks. I would describe it as a rapid fire selection of songs and videos seamlessly mixed with upbeat energy and cheeky humor. All in all, it’s very eclectic musically and visually. Kinda hard to sum up in a concise manner. 

GV: Your music videos range from old cartoons to 80′s movies, and cult classics. Do you do all the editing and directing yourself?

BCSTV: For the most part. Sometimes I’ll grab extended scenes that work and fit them tempo-wise to a song, but for the most part I’m chopping everything up and trying to make it work the way I see things in mind. 

GV: You’ve been DJing for over 10 years. You also do both remixes and video edits in which the preciseness of matching the beats with the movement in the videos is remarkable. When did you decide to incorporate video with your music? It was very much a wonderful accident.

BCSTV: A DJ friend whom I’ve known for a long time played a show with me about 5 years ago and had just downloaded Serato’s video plugin. I watched his AV set and it seemed like a million light bulbs went off over my head. I downloaded the plugin the next day and played my first video set a week later and haven’t looked back. It seems to really work with my approach and sensibility to video and music. 

GV: How do you feel that incorporating video changes the game on artist performance?

BCSTV: I think it’s amazing and nothing makes me happier than watching people’s faces in the audience who haven’t seen it before. Definitely a lot of expressions of wonderment. I would encourage video DJ’s to push it a bit further and not just be content to play music videos which can kind of de-sensitize the audience to the video-side of things after awhile. To me it’s an amazing opportunity to explore all kinds of new terrain in movies, documentaries or anything visual that can work with music and open people’s eyes…literally. 

 

GV: There are a few awesome VJs that come to mind, like Eclectic Method, Pogo, and The Funk Hunters. Do you see it catching on? Is there more VJs now than when you started?

BCSTV: There’s definitely more, but I thought so many DJ’s would be incorporating the technology by now. I’m glad they’re not because it gives me and the other artists who are serious about it something extra to showcase at our performances. Working with the video and putting it all together is very time consuming and I think that’s why a lot of DJ’s still haven’t gotten into it. 

 

GV: You’ve shared the stage with many heavyhitters like Pretty Lights, Z-Trip, A Skills, Krafty Kuts and Fort Knox 5 to name a few. Who can you say has inspires you when you watch perform?

BCSTV: I think Z-Trip and ASkillz are at the top of the list. They’re my kind of DJ, with mixes that are very eclectic and all over the place, but they put them together with a seamless flow and have great command of the stage. There’s still so many others that inspire me though. Once again it’s kinda hard to cover em all in the space here. 

GV: Your Kung Fu Hustlin video is nothing short of amazing. How long did it take you to edit that? On average how long does it take for you to put a music video together?

BCSTV: Thanks a bunch. I put that together to pay homage to that amazing movie. Stephen Chow is one of my all time favorite directors. I think that took about 3-4 days working 6-8 hours a day. I really had a great time working on it. I actually don’t play that video out too often as it takes time to set up and then another minute until the song gets going. It always goes over well when I play it and maybe I should stop overthinking it and drop it more often. Usually my videos take a day or 2 to put together. Once I decide what I want to use and have the song to work against, it doesn’t take too long. The AV remixes are definitely more involved though.

GV: When you add video to music, you are able to tell a story to what once was left for interpretation. There are so many great videos you’ve made its hard for me to pick a favorite. How do you go about selecting music that you want to make a video for? Do you make the track first with a video in mind? Or do you see a movie clip that you want to add music to?

BCSTV: I usually always start with the music and when I’m putting the song together I start getting ideas and seeing things in my mind that I want to use. I’m always grabbing lots of video footage of all kinds to have at my disposal for when I’m working on tracks. I like to try and use old or lesser known movies and animation that will hopefully make the audience say, “what is that and where’d he get it?”. 

GV: You have some songs available for free download on your soundcloud, and others for sale on Beatport. How do you determine which ones to give out and which go for sale?

BCSTV: These days I’m trying to go the free download route with almost everything. However, there are still labels and artists that I am always happy to work with so those tracks go up for sale. I love giving out my music and it’s also nice to make a buck every now and then and have my friends make some money as well. 

GV: There’s over 12 different labels that have distributed your music worldwide. What do you think of the record industry these days? 

BCSTV: How much time ya got? Just kidding, but I will say that I love the whole DIY trend that seems to be taking over the music industry. There’s a lot that’s up in the air and pretty much every person with a laptop is making music which creates a sort of cacophony that makes it’s hard for people who are making better than average or very good music to be heard. My experience with labels has mostly been good, but I do see and hear about labels who will screw their artists over to pocket some extra cash. Music doesn’t sell like it used to so a lot of these labels are ruining relationships with artists so they can grab what equates to an extra few bucks and not paying artists what they’re entitled to. Basically it blows my mind because if I ran a label and was able to attract good talent, I would make sure they were paid on time every time with full transparency to keep everyone honest and happy to be working together. I love to see labels that treat their artists well and their success then grows together. It makes me love the artist and the label that much more. 

GV: You use Twitter, Youtube, Soundcloud and your music has been blogged by many in very popular music blogs like Ghetto Funk and Stereogum. What impact do you think social media’s role plays in terms of marketing your music, promotion and music shows?

BCSTV: It plays a massive role. If a person is savvy with social media, it will give them a huge leg up on the competition. There are some artists that really aren’t all that talented musically who have made a name for themselves because they smartly worked social media. I actually wish I was better at using it strategically, but I pretty much work on music and videos all day. I forget to use twitter for my music business affairs all the time. I usually use it when I wanna make a snarky comment. That is changing though. I hope someday I have people who handle all of this so I can just concentrate on music. 

GV: You have thousands of fans, from big time movie directors, to hall of fame music legends. One movie director whom you admire thought your video remix of his movie was brilliant. What is the coolest thing a fan has ever done or said to you that makes you think those long editing hours make it all worthwhile?

BCSTV: The Edgar Wright thing is probably the best. I still get a buzz when I think of the fact that he took time to blog about me and my work. I have had few things that have happened with my career that if I die tomorrow, I will die a very happy man and that is very much one of them. Shaun Of The Dead is probably in my top 3 all time favorite comedies. I remember the first time I watched it I was so blown away by the cleverness and how it wonderfully blended genres. If anyone had told me at then that that director would give me and my work a shoutout one day, I’d have never believed it. 

GV: What does the future hold for Bobby C?

BCSTV: Lots and lots of work. You never know what the shelf life of an artist will be so you better keep working and improving. Every time I have a new success, it just makes me eager to reach even greater heights. I’m happy and flattered to be where I am though. A little over a year ago I was sitting in my room making some tunes and videos and hoping some folks might like em. By the time I get back from Europe in May, I’ll have traveled about 30,000 miles and played shows in 10 different countries in just the past year. I’m hoping to outdo that next year, but above all I will always strive to make better music and put on better shows. See you guys next week!

It’s not everyday a producer/DJ gets blogged by one of their favorite directors as is the case with Bobby C Sound TV who was recently blogged and called brilliant by Edgar Wright, director of such cult movies as Shaun Of The Dead, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World and Hot Fuzz. If that wasn’t enough, Bobby recently got a shout out by the Godfather of hip-hop, Afrika Bambaataa on a recent remix for Ft. Knox Recordings. Krafty Kuts recently called him, “the master of funky breaks”. Bobby C Sound TV is one Bobby Collins hailing from Denver, Colorado. He has been playing instruments from an early age and then a fateful show with Peanut Butter Wolf and Cut Chemist had him convinced on the spot that a pair of turntables were in his future. He has been DJing for the past 10 years and has played just about every venue in his home state including Red Rocks Amphitheater, The Fillmore as well as being the first artist in The First Bank Center (AEG’s new 8,000 seat flagship venue) for its VIP party. He has done shows, tours and festivals and all over America and Canada including a headlining spot in the Fractal Forest at Shambhala Music Festival. Fall 2012 will see him embarking on a 16 show European tour. In 2010 Bobby was one of 20 DJ’s in the US selected to play the Sweatshop Mixer at The Coachella Music Festival. In early 2009 Bobby started messing around with a video DJ plug-in and soon after unveiled, “Bobby C Sound TV”. His love of cinema was combined with his 10 years of DJ experience to create a pastiche of pop-culture that is visually stimulating and danceable at the same time. His live mash up DJ approach was applied to create crowd rocking routines with some of the most memorable music videos, movie scenes and just about everything in between.
