http://Marushka.net/I am, as I believe all beings are, a bit of everything: Singer, actor, writer, dancer, director – a strange slew of uncontrollable habits I tend to wind up in the one worded ‘Poet.’ As a child, I stood constantly before the family fireplace, harassing every new stranger with new songs. I concocted melodies across the monkey bars to keep myself company I heard the tape turning over in my mother’s karaoke machine, which mumbled, at all hours, Billie Holiday. I spent years barefoot on Hawaiian shores, strumming my grandmother’s ukulele. And later ran rampant, adolescent wild, howling to my father’s Pink Floyd. I reached the rocky piers and monstrous steel of New York City, heart broken and wallet busted, where I fell in love with my best friend’s guitar. I took to the Hudson Valley, wrote the weirdest novel and ran back to Manhattan. I drove across country, moved back to Los Angeles, set up my turntables and candles, crystals and harmonicas on a pile of books near the tin can windows of an airstream trailer my mother was kind enough to let me park beside our house. And it was somewhere in this situation of flyby nights and long mornings, nearly lost legends and hard looks in the mirror, that I was born.
❖ DJ Sleeper: 10:30 – 11:30
The love child of a composer & radio head, Sleeper was raised by instruments & gypsies. One of the top 8 DJs on the planet in the 2006 World Series Turntable Championship, his music has been featured on ESPN, MTV, & SCRATCH Magazine. His MJ remix hit #1 on Hype Machine & made it to Zeitgest’s Best Songs of 2009. A grand master in looking stupid, Sleeper’s YouTube channel has over one million views.
❖ BLACK 22s: 11:30pm – 12:35am
The Black 22’s are Los Angeles’ freshest co-ed tag team duo. J*Labs and Lou E. Bagels are not just DJs, but good vibe creators. The two are connoisseurs of high energy music and their genre busting sets include breaks, electro, NuReggae, NuFunk, and a touch of dub step. Both J*Labs and Bagels have passion for dj’ing, and rocking crowds; each has their own style and sound they bring to the table. When combined they bring a bass heavy sexy dirty party vibe that keeps the dance floor rocking. They’re known for long dj sets that send the crowd off on a musical journey. No two black 22’s sets are the same and endless hunting for new tracks keeps their sound fresh for them and their listeners. Hitting the decks with a colorful, playfull vibe Black 22’s rock the party every time.
❖ MARQUES WYATT: 12:35am – 2am
Sonic love travels in many dimensions—through visceral pathways of the senses, as a uniting force on dance floors everywhere, in movements spanning entire eras to unify—whether souls, states or nations. And as sonic love relates to house music, Marques Wyatt is a seminal pioneer. In the mid ‘80s, at a time when the shape shifting of house music was rarely heard outside Chicago and New York, Marques introduced the East Coast sound to his native Los Angeles via legendary house parties like BBC, MAC’s Garage and Does Your Mama Know, to name a few. In the ensuing years, his prowess as a talented DJ, promoter, and producer earned him recognition as one of the most sought-after artists in the genre, domestically and internationally. Always true to his inner visionary, Marques continued his ventures into uncharted territory by introducing Los Angeles to “acid jazz” through Brass, his unforgettable weekly which debuted the live performances of high profile acts such as Jamiroquai and the Brand New Heavies way back when. At the same time, Marques continued playing his own brand of uncompromising, soulfully organic house alongside talents such as Frankie Knuckles, Louie Vega, David Morales, Danny Tenaglia, King Britt, Mark Farina and Miguel Migs. Marques’s keen sixth sense for creating epic parties culminated in his weekly house institution, Deep, now going strong in its tenth year.
